Dragon’s Pride out of Dominion
Special correspondent Auckland Dragon’s Pride galloped his way at Alexandra Park on Saturday night out of a trip to Christchurch for the rich Dominion Handicap at Addington later in the month. The warm favourite on the strength of fine showings in his previous two races, he began safely enough in the Central Standardbred Handicap. But he had not gone very far before he went into a break. Unaccountably, he quite refused to heed Tom
Knowles’s strenuous efforts to pull him back to his gait and went the rest of the way in a wild gallop. Knowles said afterwards the horse had been tightened slightly early. “But it was not enough to make him break ordinarily.” mMr Noel Taylor, the trainer and co-owner with Mr Max Harvey, was also mystified. “He might have been a bit fresh,” said Mr Taylor, “but that would hardly account for the way he went.” Dragon’s Pride had looked to have a fine chance in the Taubmans-sponsored $70,000
Dominion Handicap on November 23, especially as Sir Castleton, Basil Dean and Landora’s Pride have been announced as non-starters. The Central Standardbred Handicap was won decisively by Kathy Glass. She was handy all the way and finished boldly to score by a length and a quarter from First Grade. Milson Gold was a short neck back, third. Kathy Glass had been a little disappointing in her previous race, at Alexandra Park on October 26. A six-year-old by the former smart pacer, Individual, from Mingoberry, she is trained by Jack and Brian Hughes at Pukekohe
