Camelot has fastest 3200m

Camelot has the fastest 3200 m time of 4min 6.4 s of the runners in today’s Toyota New Zealand Cup, set when winning the race last year. His winning time was the second fastest in the history of the race, that honour going to Steel Jaw, which paced the distance in 4min 5.3 s in 1983.

The likely favourites, Roydon Glen and Preux Chevalier, have yet to contest a race over the extreme distance, however their best times in distance races suggest they are well up to the task.

Roydon Glen’s best mile rate for 2700 m (mobile) is 2min 2.5 s recorded when winning last season’s TNT New Zealand Messenger Championship, while he rated 2min I.ls for the mobile 2600 m when winning the John Brandon Flying Stakes as a three-year-old.

Preux Chavalier has the distinction of holding the longest sub-2min mile rate for a distance event, having rated a brilliant Imin 58.5 s when winning the A.G. Hunter Cup over 2870 m (mobile) in Melbourne.

Our Mana, second to Camelot in the cup last year, in 4min 6.65, and the veteran of 24 starts over 3200 m for eight wins, including the 1980 Cup, Hands Down (4min 6.75) when fourth last year, are the next fastest 3200 m performers in today’s Cup.
