Three have driven Cup winners
Jack Carmichael (Globe Bay 1972) Peter Jones (Hands Down 1980) and Robin Butt (Camelot last year), are the only reinsmen in this year’s Toyota New Zealand Trotting Cup to have driven previous winners. Derek Jones is by far the most experienced driver in today’s Cup field, his drive behind Hands Down this afternoon will be his twenty-second, his best effort to date having been a third in 1953 Soangetaha. The current world champion reinsman and last season’s national premiership winner, Tony Herlihy, will be having his first drive in the Cup, behind Comedy Lad, while the leading junior reinsman, Anthony Butt (Premiership), lan Cameron (Lord Louie) and the Perth horseman, Barry Perkins (Preux Chevalier) are others to have their first Cup drive this afternoon. Listed below are today’s drivers with their past drives in the New Zealand Cup. A. Butt: first drive. R. Butt: 1983 Camelot (second), 1984 Camelot (first). I. Cameron: first drive. J.
