Angora goat stud bought for $6M

PA Wellington A New Zealander has bought $6.2 million worth of top quality Australian Angora goats to set up a stud at Te Kauwhata. Wrightson N.M.A., which arranged the sale, said this was the biggest single transaction of its kind. Wrightson’s said the buyer was Mr Robert Hall, of Taumarunui, who is developing a big goat farming venture in conjunction with Broadbank. His purchase is of the Almaree stud of West Australia and the new Stud, to be established at the Kinross Stud property near Te Kauwhata, recently bought by Mr Hall, will be known as the Almaree Angora Stud.

Mr Errol Kingsbury, Wrightson N.M.A.’s New Zealand goat manager, said that it would be one of New Zealand’s premier Angora studs.

“At present, it is acknowledged as one of Australia’s premier Angora studs,” he said. The animals will arrive in New Zealand in March next year. They include 312 Angora does, 150 doe hoggets, 51 stud bucks, and 50 buck hoggets. The does will arrive in New Zealand in kid to top Australian sires. The Almaree Stud will be one of three subsidiaries in Mr Hall’s over-all venture. One of them is already established as one of New Zealand’s leading Kashmir goat properties, ’the Cashmere Goat Stud, at Taumarunui. There extensive screening of animals for cashmere production has been done using Australian consultants. “The total value of the projected enterprise is put at $12.2 million,” said Mr Kingsbury.
