Auckland T.C.

Special correspondent Auckland Ben and Comedy Lad, as they did on the first night, are expected to dominate the finish of the main race on the second evening of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow.

Only this time, Ben is fancied to come out on top. Comedy Lady took the honours in the Phillips Lighting Classic on Tuesday by a short neck from Ben. The pair were clear of the others, which were headed by Spanker On. It was a splendid performance by Comedy Lao and he thoroughly deserved his success.

But Ben was also impressive and, unquestionably, he is improving with every race. He was third in his previous start, fourth the time before that, and eighth in his first outing of the season. It is probable, too, that the extra 500 m of the Radio i Mobile Free-for-all will suit him better.

Both Ben and Comedy Lad, of course, are leading contenders for the $225,000 New Zealand Cup at Addington on November 12. Good showings tomorrow will strengthen their already strong claims. Other Cup horses engaged in the Radio i Free-for-all are Spanker On, Vance Glory and Supreme Ruler. In their best form, they would have fine chances.

It is likely, however, the toughest opposition for Ben and Comedy Lad will come from Shineover and Frederick. Shineover finished doggedly for fourth in the 2200 m Phillips Lighting Classic after breaking at the start He has a mobile dispatch to help him this time ana, in any case, his best form has been as a stayer. Frederick, the most tightly assessed three-year-old in the country last season, graduated to a C 8 mark when he won the Wattvl Paints Kumeu Stakes at Alexandra Park on October 3. It was his first race for about six months and has probably improved him. He is favourably drawn at No. 2. The tight-class trotters put on a thrilling display on Tuesday night, when Admiral Soanai won from Jenner with a triple dead-heat for third place. All the placegetters are engaged again, in the Impact windows Handicap, and there should be another cracking race.

Admiral Soanai must be given a fine chance of completing a double, although he can be a little tricky from a standing start. Dragon’s Pride, Jenner and Landora’s Pride will also be expected to go well again, although Jenner faces a tough assignment from 25m.
