Police dog attacks

Timaru reporter Three youths were bitten by a police dog during a disturbance at a party in Timaru on Saturday even-

ing. The three youths were among five persons arrested by the police, and others might have been bitten, too. Sergeant R. M. Glendining, of the Timaru police, said the youths got too close to the dog and would not move when asked. He said the dog was placid by nature and during the incident was well under the control of its handler. The police were called to a Grey Road house at 11

p.m. after, receiving a complaint about drunken behaviour. About 30 people were at the party. No arrests were made.

At 11.45 p.m. the owner of the property called the police, by which time the number of party-goers had swollen to 100. Drunken behaviour and people breaking bottles on the road prompted the call. Two of the bitten youths were arrested on charges of using threatening language, the other on charges of breaking bottles, disorderly behaviour, and obstructing the police. They will appear in the District Court in Timaru tomorrow.
