Thurlow third in marathon

NZPA-AAP Melbourne A New Zealander, Alan Thurlow, aged 30, now living in Western Australia, came in third in yesterday’s Big M Melbourne marathon. Thurlow clocked 2hr 16min 7s to finish behind the winner, Fred van der Vennet, of Belgium, (2:12:35) and Fraser Clyne, of Scotland, (2:14:20). The future of the event, which drew nearly 5000 contestants, is now in doubt after a Victorian Government decision to charge $250,000 for the 254 police needed to control the race next year. In the women’s section, Margaret Reddan took her second consecutive Big M race, clocking 2:44.:56 and finishing 600 metres ahead of Tessa Brockwell, of Victoria, (2:46:36) and another Victorian, Petrina Trowbridge (2:46:37).
