Darts players chase $37,000

NZPA-AFP Slough, England Cliff Lazarenko of England threw a hail of accurate darts to whitewash Australia’s Terry O’Deay in the world match-play championship quarter-finals at the Fulcrum Centre in Slough on Saturday. Lazarenko, last year’s runner up, had warmed up with a 2-1 victory on Friday over Jocky Wilson, which ended with the Scot refusing to shake hands after losing a tie-break in the deciding set.

Now Lazarenko, faces his, England team-mate, and the, world champion, Eric Bristow, in the semi-finals in the chase for darts’ richest first prize of $37,787. Bristow at least allowed the England interriatidnal, Mike Gregory, two legs in their three one-sided sets.

O’Deay, the world No. 7, spent seven weeks in hospital recently following an operation for a thigh abcess, and was due to fly home to Australia for next week’s world cup. Had he reached the final and failed to return home by 9 a.m. today it would have cost him his place in Australia’s team.

Results:— Quarter-finals: E. Bristow (England) beat M. Gregory (England) 3-0; C. Lazarenko (England) beat T. O’Deay (Australia) 3-0.
