Ruapehu triathlon
Martin Reesby of Auckland won the 1985 Martini Giant Man triathlon at Mount Ruapehu on Saturday. Reesby, aged 23, won the triathlon in Ihr 29min 12s with his fellow Aucklander, Terry Newlands, aged 30, second in 1:31:16. The Giant Man veteran, Tony Gazely, aged 41, of Wellington, was third in 1:31:50. Gazely was the oldest man in the event The first of the seven women competitors home was Yvonne Sprey, aged 30,
of Palmerston North with a time of 2:14:35. Visibility on the top slopes of the mountain was poor throughout Saturday. Instead of traversing the mountain over the crater, contestants ran to the top of the giant chairlift on the Turoa skifields. From there they skied down to the car-park checkpoint at the base of Turoa. Then they had to run the 18km down the Ohakune Mountain road to the finish line at the Ohakune Junction.
