Ship refit delayed by manpower

PA Wellington The refitting of H.M.N.Z.S. Wellington is now not due to finish until July, says the Minister of Defence, Mr O’Flynn. The delay was caused by manpower shortages in key trades in the dockyards, he said. Mr O’Flynn was answering a question by Mr G. F. Gair (Nat., North Shore) during the debate in Parliament on the defence estimates. The Wellington had been taken for its refit in July, 1983, and the original estimate was to finish this in two years. One of the causes of the

manpower shortage was the improved employment situation and the wish of people in skilled trades to take well paid jobs with other employers in and around Auckland. Another cause was the drain of skilled labour to “think big” projects such as the Marsden Point oil refinery expansion and the New Zealand Steel expansion at Glenbrook. Mr O’Flynn said a suggestion by Mr J. A. Banks (Nat, Whangarei) — that when these projects were wound down tradesmen could return to the dockyards — was under consideration.
