Transport official’s claim rejected
A former secretary of the Drivers’ Union Mr Peter Liggett, took issue yesterday with a statement by the secretary of the Canterbury Road Transport Association. Mr Evan Williams was reported as saying that the last time there was a similar strike to that this week by drivers in Canterbury
(1976), the union had claimed that there were employers signing house agreements but that this was not the case. Mr Liggett said that a “considerable number” of employers had signed agreements for new rates during that strike. Mr Liggett was the secretary at the time.
