Ohinewai study cost doubles
PA Wellington The cost of investigations into the feasibility of the Ohinewai coalmine in Waikato has almost doubled, says the Minister of Energy, Mr Tizard.
The total cost of the feasibility study was now estimated at $10.7 million, he said.
Announcing Government approval for the extra $5.8 million for the feasibility studies, Mr Tizard said the money was needed to fund extra investigations into the proposed opencast mine, which would be the biggest in New Zealand. Greater difficulties had been revealed with the pro-
posed mine site than foreseen when the previous Government approved the mine’s development. “I can only deplore the blind optimism of the previous Minister of Energy (Mr
Birch) in allocating coal for New Zealand Steel’s expanded mill from this source at the time he an-
nounced it.” Mr Tizard said the previous Government had also approved the expansion of the New Zealand Steel mill, so the nation was committed to finding suitable coal for the expanded mill, which was now at an advanced state •of construction.
