Man arrested on yacht
PA Whangarei A Frenchman, aged 24, was arrested on a yacht at Whangaroa and charged with overstaying; the Immigration Division at Whangarei said yesterday. Ivon Danvert, as he has given his name to immigration officers of the Labour Department at Whangarei, entered no plea to the charge when he appeared in the District Court last Friday and again on Monday. He did not seek bail and is being held in custody at Mount Eden Prison.
Danvert will appear in the District Court at Whangarei again on October 21. A French passport was found floating in the water by the yacht after Danvert had been arrested last Friday. The Labour Department assistant district superintendent, Mr Gordon Brown, said Danvert told him the passport belonged to his brother. He did not say he threw it in the water. Danvert is alleged to have been staying illegally in New Zealand since January 1, when his seven-day visitor’s permit ran out. Mr Brown said Danvert said he had travelled extensively in New Zealand since then.
He was arrested by the Kaeo police while aboard a yacht owned by an Auckland man,, about 10 a.m. last Friday. He was held in custody at the Whangarei Central Police Station before being sent to Mount Eden after appearing in court on Monday.
