N.Z. cyclists in break
NZPA-AAP Sydney A Swiss rider, Thomas Wegmuller, slumped dramatically yesterday to retain only a one-second grip on the Commonwealth Bank Brisbane-Sydney Cycle Classic. Wegmuller held a comfortable Imin 13s lead before racing yesterday but a 42-kilometre criterium, at Forster yesterday almost cost him the lead. His troubles Started when he was left in the bunch after a breakaway by 11 riders. The group was led by Ed Schurer (the Netherlands), Graeme Miller (N.Z.), Steve Hodge (Aust. 1) and Michael Lynch (Vic.). With .them went another New Zealander, David Barnett, Brett Dutton (Aust. 2), Michael Maue (W. Germany), Bob Rasenberg (the Netherlands), Gary Oliver (Aust. 3), Andrew Logan (N.S.W.) and Stephen Fairless (Vic.). . The final sprint saw Schurer narrowly defeat Miller in a photo finish, with Hodge third, Oliver fourth and Lynch fifth. In the teams competition the New Zealanders retain their top spot after their strong shovring yesterday.'
