AUSTRALIA Profit-takers active

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed slightly easier in mixed trading marked by profit-tak-ing in the resource sector and sharp gains in selected industrial stocks. Brokers said the market held up well following Thursday’s surge. A number of small special sales in leading stocks — BHP, Bell Resources, Pioneer Concrete, National Australia Bank — added colour to trading. Near the close, the all ordinaries index had eased 1.6 points to 1033.5, but the all industrials firmed 4.9 to 1501.3. The all resources lost 6J to 671.0 and the gold marker 11.2 to 957.5. The national turnover was 70.1 M shares worth 3105.5 M, 'boosted by healthy volumes in leading resource stocks and the banks. North Broken Hill topped turnover lists among market leaders, with 2.3 M shares traded at a steady 250. BHP eased 6c to 876 with 2.1 M shares traded, CSR 1c to 375 on turnover of 1.6 M shares, Bell 20c to 1050, Peko 14c to 576 and CRA 14c to 586. In the industrial sector, Philip Morris rose 22c to 1120 on reports of a take-over bid from its United States parent company.
