Marathon surf ride
A Christchurch surf lifesaver, Chris Hall, came thirteenth in a 32-mile malibu
board marathon in California. The Catalina Marathon from Catalina Island to Manhattan Beach is regarded as one of the most prestigious events for Californian lifeguards. The race took place on August 25 in warm temperatures attracting 37 entrants. Hall, aged 21, completed the course in 7hr 58min 20s. “It’s the most gruelling physical and mental endurance event I’ve ever competed in,” he said afterwards. Hall has been involved in surf lifesaving for seven years, and has won one national, four South Island and eight Canterbury titles. He is expected back in New Zealand soon, when he returns to his job as a trainee management cadet with the Mount Cook Line.
