Planner likely to oversee scheme

The Christchurch City Council’s city planner, Mr Bill Williams, is likely to be official review planner for the third and final review of the council’s District

Scheme. This would be for about 12 months, the council’s town-planning committee recommended yesterday. The present assistant city planner, Mr John Dryden, would become acting city planner.

Mr Williams was most suited to be official District Scheme review planner as he had recently completed a tour of New Zealand comparing district schemes,

said the deputy general manager of works, Mr H. Surtees, in a report. Mr Williams had been commissioned by the Ministry of Works’ Town and Country Planning Division, and the New Zealand Planning Institute, to review district planning nationally. He was also asked to compare New Zealand planning with that overseas.

It is proposed that Mr Dryden take over full responsibility for the City Council’s planning division so that Mr Williams can concentrate solely on the review.
