Call for help to curb thefts

Christchurch people have been urged to watch for anything suspicious in an effort to help the police curb an increasing number of week-end car thefts in the city. Motorists are also warned to make sure their cars are securely locked. About 50 vehicles have been stolen each week-end in Christchurch for the last month.

More than 90 per cent had been recovered, which indicated most were taken by

joy-riders, said Detective Senior-Sergeant Quentin Doig, of the Christchurch C. 1.8. The three worst areas in the city for stolen vehicles were Riccarton Avenue and Hagley Avenue near Christchurch Hospital, Victoria Street near the Town Hall, and Chester Street West, he said.

Christchurch has the highest number of car thefts in the South Island, and the second-highest nationally after Auckland.
