Paterson feels up to par

Brent Paterson’s recent form has given him encouragement on the eve of his departure for Australia with the New Zealand golf team.

Paterson, Canterbury’s only representative in the national side, leaves today to join the Auckland pair, Michael Barltrop and Geoff Stephens, and Colin Taylor, of Waikato, for the Australian trip which involves an international contest and that country’s amateur championships. The New Zealand team will play in the Asian-Paci-fic tournament at Royal Adelaide, from September 4 to 7, and the Australian championships at Royal Perth, from September 10 to 15.

It was almost two years ago when Paterson, then aged 22, reached the final of the Australian, match-play championship, losing on the thirty-seventh hole in an epic contest with the West Australian, Wayne Smith. “I’m pretty happy with my game, I’ve done what I wanted to do and had a couple of good stroke rounds recently,” Paterson said yesterday. Within the last fortnight, Paterson has won the Rangiora open, had a win and a half against his Aorangi opponents in a representative match, and led his club, Coringa, to an opening round win in the Woodward Cup competition, Paterson taking his game at the fifteenth.
