Profit of $25,859 for Ashburton
A profit of $25,859, against $13,697 for the previous year, was reported by the president, Mr Keith Hood, to the annual meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club earlier this week. The profit was reached after allowing $12,145 for depreciation. Stakes paid during the season rose to $197,950 from $175,435, while on-course betting amounted to $1,521,362, against $1,418,423. Off-course figures reached record heights of $3,011,760. In order to avoid clashing with an England-New Zealand rugby test in Christ-
church, the club had raced on Friday before Queen’s Birthday week-end. Offcourse betting that day amounted to $1,053,934, a record for the club. The club intends to install eight more Jetbet terminals in the old tea kiosk, which is to be upgraded to include refreshment areas. The project, costing some $15,000, will ease congestion at other public facility areas.
The club took over the running of bars at its meetings and has a resident caterer also contributing towards the finances of the club, said the report.
