General forecast: In the west of the South island, rain, heavy at times overnight, and in the east, rain spreading off the ranges at times. Gale force north-westerlies east of the Alps overnight and in the morning and severe northwest gales through Cook Strait. District forecasts: Canterbury: Strong north-west winds inland at first slowly moderating; cloudy with rain about the western high country occasionally spreading east.

Marlborough: North-westerly winds, gale force in exposed places, moderating late today; overcast with rain; cool.

Nelson: Fresh northerlies, some rain; cool. Buller, Westland: Winds tending westerly this afternoon and rain easing; cool. Extended forecast to Tuesday: Cold, showery southerlies tomorrow, but clearing on Wednesday to be fine and frosty. Extended forecast to Thursday: Fine and frosty on Wednesday with little wind.
