Waikato inquiries
PA Hamilton The amateur rider, Terry Wenn, was fined $l5O by the judicial committee of the Waikato Racing Club on Saturday after an inquiry into the running of the Roger Browne Memorial Handicap at Te Rapa. Wenn, riding Whereyabin, was found to have caused interference to Lord Bingham in the final stages of the race. Whereyabin finished second and Lord Bingham third but after an inquiry the placings were reversed. Stewards found that a slipped saddle affected the chances of Avon’s Lord in the final 20m of the Trelawney Stud Foxbridge Plate. The rider, Lance O’Sullivan, was hampered by the slipped saddle, which probably cost Avon’s Lord (4th) a better placing. Stewards investigated the poor performance of the favourite, Purple Crown, in the same race. The rider, Grant Cooks-
ley, said the horse had been given every chance but had not run out the distance. The trainer, Dave Enright, told the judicial committee that the horse had been eased in training after being injured at Trentham and blew out during the race. Purple Crown had been working well before the race, Enright said, and there had been no reason to suspect he would not run accordingly. The jockey, Gary Stewart, was fined $25 for adding a breastplate to his gear after he had weighed out on Ardri for the Princes Gate Handicap. The trainer, C. H. Faulkner, was fined $75 for incorrectly declaring a rider for Turanganui at the last Te Rapa meeting. A resumed inquiry read a letter from Mr Faulkner explaining why he had declared Greg Childs as the horse’s rider when Childs was out of the country. The explanation was refused and the fine imposed.
