Social Welfare staff go-slow

Sir,—Maka Gibson in her/his letter (August 13) complained of thp reduced hours of the| Social

Welfare Department. The Social Welfare and Labour Departments staffs have not downed tools and demonstrated in the streets. Nor can they answer back when, often unjustly, accused. These staffs see 20 to 30 people each, every eighthour day. Not happy and successful, people, but distressed people to whom they must give of themselves in efforts to help. The stress of that is considerable. In return they are frequently sworn at and otherwise abused. Continually under stress, overworked, and understaffed, they can only try to reduce their load by working shorter interviewing hours. Surely some of the causes should be looked into, rather than abusing people in such thankless jobs.— Yours, etc., M. M. G. MATSON. August 15, 1985.
