Guadalcanal
Sir,—The article of August 3 under the headline “We made so many mistakes on Guadalcanal
...” is correct except for the last paragraph. For the last 12 years at least there have been no ships on any beach, only two barges and one gun barrel that local people have shown me. In the last 12 years I have not seen one piece of war debris on the 13km of main road from Honiara to Honiara Airport on Henderson Field. There is an aircraft propeller blade marking the turn-off to the golf club and the war-time control tower stands near the airport terminal building where there is a Japanese anti-aircraft gun. There are no visible scars of conflict. There are several small war memorials — American, Allied and Japanese. There is one large Japanese-built memorial to all of both sides who fell in the Pacific conflict. This overlooks Honiara and Henderson Field. — Yours, etc.,
M. MCDONALD. August 5, 1985.
