Paparua Prison’s head transferred
The superintendent of Paparua Prison, Mr Charles Hood, has been appointed to a new post in the North Island. Mr Hood, who has been in charge of Paparua Prison since December last year, will become the new head of the Waikeria Youth Institution.
He will succeed Mr Bill Garrett, who has retired since being in charge of the prison since early last year. Mr Mitchell Leimon will act as head of Paparua Prison until a successor to Mr Hood is appointed. Mr Hood was awarded the British Empire Medal in the 1966 New Year Honours List for gallant conduct during the 1965 Paparua Prison riot.
A former security officer and military he
joined the Prison Service in Wellington in 1960. He has also served at Addington and Paremoremo prisons, and been in charge of the Invercargill Youth Institution, and the Waipiata Youth Institution in Otag6.
