Canty skiers win

The Canterbury skiers, Graeme Goodwin and Kate Rattray, confirmed their present good form when they took the major honours at the Air New Zealand Trophy event at Mount Hutt over the week-end.

Rattray in particular was in fine touch, especially on Saturday when she confronted gusty winds and a top-line field in the giant slalom event.

Rattray turned in a time of 2 minutes 23.30 s for her two runs — more than three full seconds ahead of her fellow New Zealand A team mate, Christine Grant (Queenstown). It was all Rattray again yesterday when she came home first in the slalom, skied in conditions of varying visibility and on a technically demanding course.

Weldon had finished third in the giant slalom behind Grant, who failed to complete her first run in the slalom.

The improving Juliet Satterthwaite of Canterbury chalked up her second fourth placing over the two day event to take third in the combined placings behind Rattray and Weldon. Goodwin had some luck on his side in taking first place in the combined standings at the culmination of the event.

He finished second to Simon Wi Rutene (Rotorua) after the giant slalom, just .11 separating the two skiers. Wi Rutene failed to finish the slalom yesterday, allowing Goodwin a much easier time of it. He subsequently came home first in 1:48.21, more than five seconds ahead of the second placegetter, Eric Hickerson, only 14, from the United States.

Hickerson finished second on combined placings, and third was William Hunt of Southern Districts. Results:
