Good performances at workouts
Although not all drivers were trying for time, there were some impressive performances at the Ashburton trotting workouts on Thursday. The first came from Avalon Ray, a maiden pacer trained by Cyril Hay, who drove the runner-up Bringelly. John Hay, a son of the trainer, drove the six-year-old, Avalon GlobeOnager gelding to win a maiden heat in 3min 11.8 s, seven seconds better than the unqualified pacers produced in ideal conditions. Globe Tour and Simon Katz started from 50m in the Cl and faster trot and Lynette Bebbington got the former home in 3min 11.55. They came the last 800 m, after sitting parked out over the last lap, in Imin Is. Even though Boyden Royale did not register a brilliant time, he did impress in the way in which he led the first heat of Cl and faster pacers throughout He came
the last 800 m in Imin Is for Leo O’Reilly.
The second heat went to Samson, which trailed Norton, then came away over the last 200 m. Lew Foy ran on well for second, just ahead of Norton and the trotter, Sir Castleton, which did well to get so close after backing away at the start. The winner went 3min 10.1 s, with the last 800 m in 58.85.
Finally, Gordon Middleton drew attention to the potential of his Noodlum colt, Sir Robert. He slowed the horse to wait for the only other starter, then sprinted the last 800 m in Imin 2s, with the full 1700 m taking 2min 265.
