Lord Paul warrants respect today

Lord Paul’s impressive winning run at Washdyke seven days ago should ensure plenty of respect from T.A.B. trebles punters when assessing prospects at the Kurow Trotting Club’s meeting at Oamaru today.

The Lordship-Paula Brigade entire produced the smartest run of the day at Timaru, winning over today’s distance of 2000 m from a stand in 2min 35.25, the leaders pacing their closing 800 m in 59.45. Back to the 800 m, Lord Paul showed plenty of zest by looping the field at the 700 m and kept up a fine run to win by three lengths. His big stumbling block in the Hands Down Pace, the third leg, is likely to come from the Chertsey-trained Elbon Blue, which continued his fine run of form at Addington in July with a storming finish for second to Nanoose at Washdyke last Monday. Elbon Blue, which seems much better suited coming from the tail of the field in recent starts, should also go close today. The Southland-trained Ran Tan, a disappointment at Addington last month when inconvenienced by a shoeing problem, would only need to repeat the form he showed at Addington in November to win the first leg of the T.A.B. treble, the W. B. McCone Memorial. The Nat Lobell-Kotahi Star gelding comes in to favour in a race depleted by The Oamaru-owned and Ashburton-trained Skipper Dale is also likely to come in for solid support after showing promise in two starts in the autumn, winning a maiden in style at Methven in April. Counsel Bay should round off some consistent efforts in the middle leg, the FTC Big Softie Handicap.
