How a New Zealand wire maker overcame export barriers. New Zealand Wire Industries were up against some mighty obstacles in their bid to crack the tough Aussie wire market. For a start, long years of drought in the outback had dried up demand in the rural sector. A sustained economic recession had also taken its toll. And to cap it all, a well-entrenched Australian manufacturer held the high ground with 96% of the total wire market. Previous attempts by non-Australian companies to break this stranglehold had failed utterly. New Zealand Wire Industries were determined not to suffer the same fate. A preliminary research project identified the major snags to avoid; the next stage was to develop a total marketing strategy that combined pricing, distribution and service in one winning package. Now, four years down the track, New Zealand Wire Industries is one of only two significant wire suppliers to the Australian market. Export sales have climbed off the graph, and the company is in a strong position to make the most of some exciting new developments on the horizon. None of this could have been achieved without a commitment to thorough, innovative planning and marketing. And it’s this dedication to export success which wins New Zealand Wire Industries the Premier 1985 Mobil Export Marketing Award. Other 1985 Mobil Export Award Winners, whose efforts have similarly contributed to this country’s growth, include Carlyon Holdings, Paul Tidmarsh New Zealand Ltd, Beca Worley International, Feltex Furnishings, J & A P Scott, and Grower Holdings Limited.
