Handicap road race win to Tony Good
Tony Good (Olympic), a former national marathon champion, took the fastest time in the annual Governor’s Bay to Lyttelton 10km handicap road race on Saturday. Good’s time of 29min 15s was 19s faster than the winning time last year of Kevin O'Sullivan (University), who did not run on Saturday. Three runners who started with Good off the backmark took the next three fastest times.
In the women’s race Mary Warne (University) confirmed her backmark ranking by taking fastest time in 36:15.
Bruce Burns (Olympic), who was fourth fastest veteran last year in 33:06, improved to take fastest time on Saturday in 32:14. The surprise of the day was the effort of United’s Bill Malloch, who took second fastest time in his first race as a veteran, beating other well-performed veterans and improving by more than a minute on his time last year. The Canterbury veteran women’s road champion, Prue Taylor (University),
took the fastest time in the veteran women’s race in 39:14, just four seconds faster than Lyn Epps’ winning time last year. The races were organised by the Methodist Harrier Club.
