10 cars a night taken in Chch
More than 10 cars were taken illegally each night in Christchurch last month, many of them from three “black-spots” in the city. Riccarton Avenue and Hagley Avenue near Christchurch Hospital, Victoria Street near the Town Hall, and Chester Street West were the worst areas for stolen vehicles, said Detective Senior-Sergeant Quentin Doig, of the Christchurch C. 1.8. Last month 354 cars were taken, which was higher than normal. Most had been recovered.
“We hope people in these areas will keep their eyes open for anything suspicious,” he said. Twenty-nine Minis had been taken since July 27 when the movie “Goodbye Pork Pie” was screened on television. All but three had been recovered, which indicated the offenders were probably joy-riders. “How many of the thefts can be connected with the screening of the movie we can only guess, but there were more than we would expect,” said Detective Senior-Sergeant Doig.
