Compensation of $3360 sought for windows
Compensation of ?3360 was sought from John William Powell who admitted intentionally damaging 14 windows in the Hornby Mall on August 2. Powell, aged 17, a labourer (Mr E. Bedo), who admitted the offending, was remanded by Judge Bisphan to August 23 for a probation report and sentence. Bail was continued. Sergeant W. J. McCormick said the police were called in response to alarms sounding in the Hornby Mall at 11.50 p.m. Two vehicles were seen parked near to where a number of shop windows had been broken. The defendant was a passenger in one of the vehicles. While being spoken to by a constable he became abusive and threatened to punch the constable. Because of this Powell was arrested. Although he denied breaking any windows Powell’s clothing was found sprinkled with fragments of glass, said Sergeant McCormick. Four burglaries Bail was set at ?2000 and Shane Samuel Hall, was ordered to report daily to the police after pleading guilty to four charges of burglary. Hall, aged 17, unemployed (Mr E. Bedo), was convicted
and remanded to August 23 for a probation report and sentence. Three of the burglaries were on premises in Papanui Road and involved the taking of $9B in cash and some biscuits, said Sergeant McCormick. Property worth $l4ll was taken from the burglary of the Papanui Indoor Cricket Club on March 23, said Sergeant McCormick. This included a colour television set, a radio tape deck, 12 dozen beers, and six dozen cans of soft drink. Damage done to the various premises as a result of forced entries was about $290, and compensation was sought. Periodic detention Rodd Noel Perreau, aged 18, unemployed (Mr K. J. Grave), was sentenced to periodic detention for four months after earlier being convicted of five charges of theft. Property taken included four wheel assemblies, and eight car badges, from car firms; and a cassette player and tapes, a sheepskin jacket, and a pair of sunglasses, of a total value of $1430, from a parked car. The offending took place between July 11 and 15. Perreau told the police he had intended to sell the stolen property as he needed money.
