‘Fourth Estate’
Sir,—Would the Director-Gen-eral of Television comment on the reason for shifting “Fourth Estate” to 10 p.m.? This is one of the most informative and enlightening programmes on the media. The programme, with Brian Priestley as the presenter, was most looked forward to by me and a great many of my friends. I feel that the later time will be most inconvenient to younger viewers.—Yours, etc., G. R. FORBES. July 27, 1985. [Mr D. J. Monaghan, controller of programming of Television New Zealand, replies: “The time change for ‘Fourth Estate’ was a result of the necessary introduction of advertising on Friday evening on One. To preserve common junctions between One and Two meant an inevitable shift of this 15-minute programme, a duration rarely used internationally. We consider that relocation of ‘Fourth Estate’ to 10 p.m. is to this programme’s advantage, given that the ‘Eye Witness News’ audience will have the opportunity to switch over. We also consider that 10 p.m. is not a particularly late hour on a Friday evening.”]
