N-free treaty ‘innocuous’
PA Nukualofa Statements that the United States considered the South Pacific Nuclear-Free Zone Treaty was innocuous have brought comment from the Prime Minister, Mr Lange. An American State Department spokesman, Mr Bernard Kalb, said at a press conference amidst laughter that the United States had got a “message in a bottle” from the Cook Islands about the treaty. Mr Lange told reporters in Tonga yesterday that the United States was very good at flippant responses when it was appropriate to make
a flippant response. “And they are very good at making a grave response when it is good to make a grave response.” Mr Kalb said the United States was relieved that the treaty was as innocuous as it had been led to expect. Mr Lange said that the Americans had talked to Australia and New Zealand and considered the treaty and decided it was something not of enormous moment to them. The Minister of Defence, Mr O’Flynn, said in Wellington yesterday that Mr Kalb’s comment confirmed United States insensitivity to Pacific nations.
