N.Z. chess sponsor
The New Zealand Chess Association now has a national sponsor. The president of the association, Sir John Marshall, said that Robt Jones Investments, Ltd, had agreed to become national sponsor for New Zealand chess. Sir John said the association welcomed the support given to chess by the company. “This will enable us to offer prize-money of $3OOO for the annual championship.” The silver rook trophy presented to the winner of the championship has been named the Robt Jones trophy. The trophy is held by Vernon Small, of Canterbury. “This is one of the oldest championship chess trophies in the world and it bears the name of every national champion since 1879,” said Sir John. Sir Michael Fowler, a director of Robt Jones Investments, Ltd, said the company was delighted to sponsor the association. "We consider that the game in many respects reflects our company’s activities and we look forward to strengthening our relationship with the association."
