Milk

Sir,—The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, was reported as referring to “fresh milk in bottles at the front gate” and “the excellent record of the (town milk) industry and the quality of service to consumers” (“The Press,” August 1). Mr Moyle should know that pasteurised milk is legally neither fresh nor milk. Having collected hundreds of the 5000 signatures petitioning for the resumption of home deliveries of milk, I know the disgust felt by the 30,000 former consumers of milk in Christchurch concerning the quality of service when milk and cream deliveries were discontinued. Mr Moyle discussed “trends working against milk consumption,” but omitted the most obvious reason: the failure of “milk vendors” to vend milk. By his office Mr Moyle is more concerned to promote the interests of producers than those of consumers. He should pay attention to the Food Act, 1981, administered by his colleague, the Minister of Health.—Yours, etc., PAUL MALING, August 7, 1985.
