Use of atomic bomb
Sir,—lt seems to be necessary every year to tackle the myth that the atomic bombs ended the war. From the facts that have come out since, the most that can be said is that the Hiroshima bomb speeded up by a short time the surrender of a Japan already beaten and seeking peace. Nothing can justify the extra bomb on Nagasaki. Don MacKenzie, who 40 years later still thinks the bombs were used “too sparingly,” should realise that in Hiroshima week we are not only extending sympathy and sorrow for the Japanese civilians who suffered and are still suffering. All humanity has been threatened and terrorised ever since by the monster let loose on that day; and there would be no starving multitudes in Africa if the resources and technology so deployed were directed towards human needs. — Yours, etc., ELSIE LOCKE.
