Braun meets Petacci
REACT’s fourth production opens in the Free Theatre tomorrow evening. The play is “Summit Conference” by Robert David MacDonald. Eva Braun and Clara Petacci, the mistresses of Hitler and Mussolini, are holed up in an ante-room at the Berlin chancellery taking tea, while their lovers carve up the map of Europe offstage. When the play ran in London’s West End Glenda Jackson and Georgina Hale played Eva and Clara. For REACT’s production, Alison
Quigan plays Eva, and Sandra Rasmussen, Clara. The other member of the cast is Nic Farra, recently returned to Christchurch after two years at the New Zealand Drama School. He plays a young German soldier assigned to serve and guard the two women. The young guard is plied with drink and becomes the victim of the women’s anger and frustrations. “Summit Conference” is a black comedy. Yvonne Martin, from the Court Theatre, directs. The play will run for a month.
