Loxton show

The work of leading Australian artist, John S. Loxton, will be exhibited from August 11 to 22. John Loxton, who died in 1969, has long been regarded as at the forefront of Australian art. He painted in both oils and watercolours, preferring to work out of doors. His landscapes were painted directly from nature on site. He studied in Melbourne, London, Paris, Rome, and Florence. A fellow of the New South Wales Royal Society of Artists and the Royal South Australian Art Society, he was president of the Fellowship of Australian Artists for 14 years. He was the art critic for a Melbourne daily newspaper and judged many

art contests. The painter travelled extensively in search of subjects. He exhibited many times in the Royal Water Colour Society Gallery in London. Of the paintings to be on display at Fishers in Colombo Street, many were reserved by the painter for a further exhibition he intended holding in London. His works hang in the Royal Academy in London, and in collections throughout the world. A book on his work, published in Australia, was printed in a limited edition. Fifty four of his paintings will be on display. They are the last of his previously unexhibited work to go on show.
