Conditions in Chile
Sir,—The reply of David Camus, the Chilean Ambassador, is no more than the cowardly glossing over of the truth. I have been to
Chile and since returning have closely followed developments there through various newspapers and organisations. Mr Camus’ comments miss the real issues in Chile today and are purely Government propaganda. How can one explain away the Centrale Nacional de Investigaciones, whose most important role is the torture and murder of anyone opposed to the present regime; the beatings and shooting of protesters in antiGovernment marches; Pinochet’s SUSIB million house, while nearly three million people do not have homes; the hundreds who have gone missing? Chileans have now suffered 13 years of brutality and oppression at a level seldom encountered in other countries be they Right or Left. — Yours, etc., MICHAEL BENNET. August 3, 1985.
