Cigarette price up
PA Auckland Smokers will soon be paying almost 5 per cent more for products made by the Rothmans Tobacco Company. The company has increased its prices to retailers, but the effect on the public will not be felt until existing stocks are depleted. The increases will add 8c to the cost of a packet of 20 cigarettes and 10c to the price of a packet of 25.
A 50 gram packet of tobacco will increase 16c. A Rothmans spokesman said that increases in costs of raw materials, combined with higher Government charges and interest rates, had forced the price rises. The managing director of W. D. and H. O. Wills, Ltd, Mr Stuart Watterton, said the company did not plan to increase prices immediately, but would watch costs closely.
