Life prisoner lodges appeal

PA Auckland A convicted murderer, Hugh Wickliffe, who has served 13 years of a life sentence, has found new evidence which could see his case reopened. Lawyers acting for him have filed an application with the Court of Appeal . asking the Court to consider the new evidence, revealed under the Official Information Act. But the Paremoremo prisoner, who failed in an earlier appeal, must first overcome jurisdictional problems before a second appeal can be heard so long after his conviction. Wickliffe was sentenced to life imprisonment in

May, 1972, when he was 23. He had been found guilty of the murder of a jeweller who was shot in his Cuba Street, Wellington, shop. In 1976, Wickliffe became the first prisoner to escape from the top security prison at Paremoremo but was recaptured less than 100 metres from the jail. His new evidence is a statement made by a witness to the shooting. The statement was made to the police but not produced by the prosecution at Wickliffe’s trial and allegedly not made available to lawyers defending him at the time. An Auckland lawyer, Mr Charles Cato, confirmed that he had lodged an appeal on behalf of Wickliffe.
