Rowing eight resolute

PA Auckland The New Zealand rowing eight flew out of Auckland yesterday with the rest of the national team, determined to prove something at the world championships in Belgium. Only Nigel Atherfold, George Keys and Dave Rodger remain from the crew that both finished a disappointing fourth at last year’s Olympics and which won gold at the world championships two years ago. The coach, Mr Harry Mahon, who with the coxless four coach, Mr Brian Hawthorne, will not join the team until Friday, feels his eight this year is an exciting prospect in spite of all the changes brought on by the unavailability of top oarsmen. The eight, and some of the other crews, finished its training at the week-end with a gruelling two-day super-compensation exercise. Mr Mahon was pleased with the times that were produced under stress. The eight lineup is (from stroke back): Geoff Horan, Kevin Lawton, Neil Gibson, Nigel Atherfold, George Keys, Bruce Holden, Dave Rodger, Allan Horan. The cox is Brett Hollister. Mr Mahon said both the single sculler, Jock Manson, and the team reserve, Simon Aplin, were fast.
