Top chess pair win
The top two teams from the preliminary rounds of “The Press” A grade schools’ chess competition, Christchurch Boys and Burnside, both had wins in the first legs of the roundrobin play-off series. Burnside, fourth last year, beat the 1984 runner-up, Shirley, 4%-l¥2, while the defending champion, Christchurch Boys, downed Christ’s College, 4-2. In both cases, though, the losers fared better than when they met the same teams in the preliminary competition. Results:— A GRADE Christchurch B.H.S. A 4, Christ’s College A 2
