Rail ferry food under scrutiny
PA Wellington Cook Strait rail ferry food is being scrutinised by a top chef appointed by the general manager of the Railways Corporation, Mr Gordon Purdy. The appointment of Mr Maaten Groen, tutor in charge of food and catering at Wellington Polytechnic, comes after recent criticism of rail ferry fare from an American tourism expert,
Professor Jim Makens. Professor Makens was not impressed with what he described as a choice of beans on toast or stale sausage rolls. Mr Groen said yesterday that he had a wide brief to study the ferry food and would look also at food preparation, service, and facilities. He expects to report to Mr Purdy in about six weeks.
