Help for ‘peace fleet’ strikes snag
PA Wellington The Prime Minister’s Department has asked the Ministry of Defence to assist with Greenpeace “peace fleet” preparations for the voyage to Mururoa Atoll, according to a Ministry spokesman. The spokesman told NZPA that the Prime Minister’s Department had asked the Ministry to see whether it could assist the “peace fleet” with a number of items for the Mururoa voyage. A Greenpeace representative, Ms Carol Stewart, confirmed that the environmental group had been in contact with the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, after the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior seeking assistance with navigational equipment for the peace fleet. However, the Ministry spokesman said that it was now unlikely the Alliance, a converted coastal scow, and the two yachts Varangian and the Greenpeace-owned Vega would sail for Mururoa with naval equipment aboard. He said this was because they did not have power supplies capable of driving the naval equipment.
