P.M.’s view on intervention

PA Wellington New Zealand would not support any United States military intervention in the Philippines, the Prime Minister. Mr Lange, has told the New Zealand Philippine Support Group. The support group had written to Mr Lange seeking his comments on a reported statement by the Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs. Mr Hayden, that Australian forces ' could be obliged under the A.N.Z.U.S. treaty to help protect American bases in the Philippines from either internal or external threats. The text of Mr Lange's reply was released by the

group. Mr Lange said New Zealand had. from time to time, trained Philippine Armed Forces personnel. "I think I should make it clear, however, that New Zealand is in no way involved in any military operations against Philippine citizens and we would certainly never support military intervention by any country in the Philippines," he said. However, a support group spokesman, Ms Paulette Keating, said that New Zealand would be asked to play a combat role in the Philippines should the United States intervene there.
