Dept improves way it gathers statistics

PA Wellington The Education Department is improving the way it collects statistics on ethnic students to help plan and monitor programmes aimed at breaking down the barriers many such students face. The latest "Education Gazette” says there is no standardised method of collecting statistics on Maori and Pacific Island students as they progress through the education system. It says comprehensive and accurate information about numbers and location is vital if their needs are to

be properly met. This will serve three main purposes — to monitor the effects of new policies, to provide feedback for parents and organisations representing ethnic groups, and to help planning for the provision of resources. The “Gazette” says it is generally felt that students can best decide their ethnic origin or in the case of young children their parents or guardians. “The information is most readily collected on enrolment of students at the various institutions or on enrolment for examinations and awards.” it savs.
