Heart disease still main killer
PA Wellington The total number of deaths recorded in New Zealand in 1983 was 26,007, an increase of 1.8 per cent on the 1982 figures, said the Health Department. The deputy chief health statistician. Mr Jim Fraser, said that coronary heart disease continued to be the leading cause of death in New Zealand. “In 1983, 30 per cent (4241) of the male and 24 per cent (2904) of the female deaths were attributed to this cause," he said. Mr Fraser said that lung cancer (948 deaths) was still the main cause of cancer deaths of males and the breast was the main site of
cancer deaths in women (537 deaths). Mr Fraser said that a review of deaths in the agegroup, 30 to 64. between 1967 and 1983 showed a steady decline in all-cause, age-standardised mortality rates for both men and women. "This is largely accounted for by reductions in the death rates from diseases of , the circulatory system ineluding coronary heart X disease and strokes," said ” Mr Fraser. c > Death rates from asthma > fell at all ages under 70, and Mr Fraser said the rate of 'i 2.7 per 100,000 population recorded for the 15 to 24 age-group in 1983 was the lowest since 1975.
