Smooth Fella top sire

By JEFF SCOTT Smooth Fella, with a $235,865 contribution by his star son and leading earner for the 1984-85 term, Roydon Glen, ran out a narrow winner over Lordship on the standardbred sires list for last season. After a close battle over the last few months the boom son of Most Happy Fella finished the season with his stock winning $532,509.80, some $22,464.15 ahead of Lordship, with earnings of $510,045.75. Smooth Fella, which is fully booked to 150 mares at a fee of $5OOO at Roydon Lodge this spring, left 82 starters in New Zealand last season which gained 89 wins, 62 seconds and 61 thirds. Smooth Fella has continued a rapid rise to become the premier New Zealand sire. In the 1983-84 term he finished third to Game Pride and Lordship on the national list, and last season, with his oldest stock only six-year-olds, reached the ultimate position. His winners in New Zealand last season were: Roydon Glen (12), Most Happy Milly and Rita Lass (five), Beaudiene Fella and Ra-» chael Dancer (four), Happy Rose, Royal Rumour and Time Again (three), Annie Smooth, Berndon Star, Byrd Talk, Double Smooth, Fell Off, Felladale, Narrobbie, Royal Smooth, Slugger, Smooth Excuse, That Fella and Traitor’s Gate (two); while individual winners of one race were: African Man, Alpine Fella, Birdie’s Fella, Coringa Comet (dead-heat), Dashing, Fellazan, Formal Fella, Happy Feet, Kanga Proof, Lady Leonora, Lovester, McFavour, Minder, Miss Arena, Mister Kool, Montrose, Movie Star, Saucy Star, Slinky Fella, Smooth Ensign, Smooth Falcon, Smooth Sally, Smooth Sheila, Smooth Twinkle, The Bucaneer and Western Fella. Lordship, the premier New Zealand sire in the 1979-80 term, again continued his dominance on the New Zealand scene by hav-

ing 104 starters for 114 pacing winners and four trotting winners. Enterprise, which struck a purple patch of form over the Christmas-New Year period winning five out of six starts including a new national record for 2600 m (mobile) of 3min 14.8 s at Addington in January, was Lordship’s best earner for the season with $75,080, while Premiership $51,160 also made a notable contribution to the earnings for the 27-year-old Globe Lodge sire. A breakdown of Lordship’s 118 winners for the season are: Enterprise (eight), Lord Louie and Premiership (six), Hamy’s Pride, Likely Lord, Malaz and Travel Warrant (five); Bardon Bridge and Sure He Can (four), Dunlord, Freightman, Lord Tryax and Spangled Lord (three), Apache Banner, Black Debate, Bobanish, Hanover Donna, Heiden, Horizon, Lady Megan, Lord Grace, Lord Kara, Lordshipm’an, Lorfay, Maureen’s Dream, Nagle, Phar Lord, Robindale Lord, Rotary Motor and Vision Mixer (two); while other individual winners were: Adadas, Adieu Girl, Adioo Omahae, Ashley Globe, Brooklee Princess, Cardigan Globe, Jetsetter, Kayoss, Lady Delwin, Lady Rakau, Lord Mills, Lord Morano, Lord Samuel, Lord Shamrock, Lordover, Luckyship Two, Midnight Magic, Paleface Lord, Polita, Precipitate, Rare Gift, Regal Flyer, Rely and Special View. The performances of Roydon Glen, unbeaten in 12 starts last season, also made a dominating contribution to the total of his dam sire, Lumber Dream, which cemented his claim as New Zealand’s champion broodmare sire with progeny from mares by the 27-year-old stallion winning $487,335.67 last term.
